What is the Nose of Wine? | The Reason People Stick Their Nose In Their Wine Glass
The nose of wine is a term used to describe the scents and aromas that a glass of wine gives off. This video briefly takes you through the term “nose”. Enjoy!
Nose of Wine
Hi, I’m Tim from Elma Wine & Liquor. I’m here today to talk to you about a term that’s very commonly used in the wine world, especially when you’re tasting wine. It’s called the “nose” of the wine. When you hear somebody refer to a wine having a good nose or ask, “What’s the nose on that wine like?” They are not actually talking about your physical nose. They are talking about the aromas and the smells that come out of the wine.
One of the first steps when you’re tasting wine is to take a big sniff. Professional tasters and sommeliers stick their nose right down into the glass. This allows them to get as much of the bouquet as possible. That’s also why you see people swirling the wine around to open up some of those aromas and release the scents in the wine.
Swirl Before You Nose
The more they swirl around, the more the aromas come out of the glass. So, when you hear somebody talk about the word nose or wine having a good nose, they are referring to the scents and the aromas that are coming out of the wine.
