Tasting Wine & Single Malt Scotch | Learn About Wine & Scotch
We have a guest in today sharing a few of her delicious wines and single malt Scotches. Watch as we taste through and share some insight into each product!
Tim: Thanks for joining us today, we have three wonderful wines and two great single-malt scotches that we’re going to taste through with Rosemary from Gallo. We are going to walk through a couple of her products that she brought today. So, what do we have first?
Rosemary: First we have the Dark Horse Chardonnay, it’s from California, it’s aged in both stainless steel and oak. You get lots of apple and pear but you also get the roundness on the palate without getting too much butter.
Tim: A little bit of butter on the finish but not overly powering, not too rich, just the perfect amount.
Rosemary: Up next is Carnivor Zinfandel. It is our newest release, also out of California, big bold flavors, lots the blackberry, cherry, and a little bit of mocha.
Tim: Lots of blackberry.
Rosemary: Super smooth.
Tim: Little bit of mocha and some cedar on the finish.
Rosemary: A little bit of cedar.
Tim: Very good wine, very well made, very good.
Rosemary: We move on to the Gascón. Gascón’s going to be a touch dryer, also some big bursts of cherry, this one is going to have a little more tannin to it and then some subtle notes of chocolate and spice.
Tim: Cherry, dryer, a lot more tannin, it really grabs your mouth about halfway through. The finish is very smoothly, I like this one a lot.
Rosemary: One of my favorites.
Tim: This is one of my favorite Malbecs out there right now.
On to the Scotches.
Rosemary: Yes, we have Jura 10, it’s our newest addition to Gallo. It’s from the island of Jura right off the coast of Scotland, it is a 10-year, aged in white American oak with Oloroso sherry butts. You’re going to have a nose of nectarines and coffee.
Tim: I don’t smell the nectarines but I definitely smell a lot of coffee and some smoke.
Rosemary: Sort of lightly peated.
Tim: Very smooth, very light bodied, it’s not overly smoky like a lot of people find Scotch. It’s very light and mild if you don’t like that smokiness.
Rosemary: We have the Dalmore 12-year, also done in American white oak and Oloroso sherry wood. This one is going to have a little bit more chocolate to it, some subtle spices, also some nectarine, nice soft finish.
Tim: Some dark chocolate, little bit of citrus fruit, very nice smells. The nose is much more vibrant on this than the Jura.
Rosemary: Sure, you get also a lot more roasted coffee.
Tim: Even less smoke, much smoother, a little bit of peatiness on the finish, but it sneaks up after the fact. A lot of fruit on this one. And that sherry, that sweetness from the sherry casks really comes through as well.
