Tasting Prosecco Vermentino & A Red Blend
Hi it’s Tim from Elma Wine & Liquor. I’m here today because I have some opened bottles of wine and I decided to pour some samples for myself and tell you what they taste like and teach you a little bit about them.
Prosecco – Sparkling Italian Wine
The first one I have is a Prosecco, this is Bellissima Prosecco. it’s fairly new to the market. It’s actually a company owned by Christie Brinkley. She was featured on Good Morning America in December with her new line of Proseccos.
Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine. It is Italy’s version of champagne. Proseccos is made with a Glera grapes and they tend to be a little bit sweeter and lighter than champagnes. This particular one is very light. Christie Brinkley’s, wines are made with organic grapes and she was aiming for low sugar contents. Very light-bodied, there’s some apple and a little bit of melon flavors in there but very light, very refreshing. It would be great for a hot day.
Vermentino – A Grape Everyone Should Try
The second wine up is another Italian. This is a Vermentino grape, the wine is called Solosole it is from Tuscany. The Vermentino grape isn’t super common, you don’t see it a lot but it’s native to Italy and it’s grown extensively in France as well. It is a white grape, so white wine. It’s a little bit heavier than Pinot Grigio but a little bit lighter than a Chardonnay. I find it right in the middle. This one has some texture to it, some creaminess. It’s almost Chardonnay like in some of its qualities. A little bit of peach flavor to it, it’s a very nice wine. If you have never had a Vermentino before I would recommend picking one up sometime and trying it.
Red Blend With Complexity
The third one that I have is from Cline Cellars, this is a red blend called Black Magic Cashmere and it is made with Petite Syrah, Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache. It’s from California. Red blends are a very popular category right now. We were actually asked to bring this one in by a customer. Mourvedre is an interesting grape, not a lot of people are familiar with it. It is a Spanish grape, I believe, by origin but it’s grown all over Europe, France as well. Cote du Rhones use it and I see it more and more in blends from California.
It is more often a blending grape than just a straight wine grape itself. It’s usually a very tannic wine it has very strong flavors. There’s a little bit of a different flavor to it and it definitely shows through here. Some people really don’t like it, some people really enjoy it. I’m in the group that enjoys it, I think it’s a little bit different and it’s usually what I go for when I’m drinking wine. This has a very nice full body to it, a lot of blackberries and ripe cherries on the nose. It evolves on your palate. It has a good complexity to it which is nice for a good wine in a good price range.
Those are my wines for today. I hope you enjoyed watching and I hope you learned something new. As always we’d really appreciate your comments and your feedback and more questions for us. Let us know what you think. Thank you very much for watching, see you soon. Cheers.
