Viognier (“Vee-oh-nyay”):
A seductive white wine from Southern France, more specifically Northern Rhone original that is boasted of its aromas of peach, tangerine, and honeysuckle. If you love brood over bolder white wines like Chardonnay, Viognier is definitely your type! A sip of Viognier will leave your palate with a dry or slightly off-dry style while embellishing peachy aromas.
A common characteristic of this variation of grape is the oily sensation in the middle of your tongue. If it’s a drier style, it’ll come across less fruity on the palate and you’ll notice a subtle bitterness, such as crunching into a fresh rose petal. This variation of wine will make you feel like you’ve taken a step into France, sitting in the sun, and admiring the endless beauty of life and love.
This is a timeless type of wine that is only grown in Rhone and California as the grapes are very hard to grow, which makes few grape vineyards the lucky ones to have created such a perfect white wine.
What to pair with Viognier:
Experts at Elma, Wine & Liquor suggest to fully respect its delicate floral notes and medium acidity to find the perfect food pairing.
Expand on the wine’s core flavors while you make sure the foods you choose are not too acidic or bold. Fresh chicken salads with apricot, peach or mango or dishes with ginger, saffron, and coconut are a great start!
Also, don’t be afraid to introduce a mild creamy curry similar to the south-east Asian style curries. If you love seafood, rich shellfish dishes like seared scallops, grilled lobster, and baked crab with a touch of spice will have your guests in awe of your pairing expertise!
Cheese lovers – go bold with this carefully crafted Viognier.
White Wine:
White wine is made without the skin of the grape. Also, the majority of white wines are lighter and have a crisper, more citrusy flavor compared to red. It’s best to serve white wine in glasses with a larger bowl so that bold aromas and flavors emerge as they mingle with oxygen in the air. Traditionally speaking, white wines are served before reds, while younger wines should be served before older vintages.
