Monte Do Carrapatelo Elma Wine & Liquor Select Red Blend

This signature blend was carefully selected by the staff of Elma Wine & Liquor and is our second barrel select from this winery! We had the selection from three different barrels, each having its own unique blend of varietals. Ours features a composition of 41% Touriga Nacional; 34% Alicante Bouschet; 25% Aragonez.

The family owned business is run by Luis Duarte and his wife Dora Simões.  The winery was founded in 2007 and has its base in the south of Portugal in the Alentejo wine region, subregion Reguengos de Monsaraz, where their vineyards are also located. Mr. Duarte has been a winemaker for 30 years. He started is professional career at Herdade do Esporão where he was Production Director for 18 years. He is consultant of some of the most prestigious wineries in Alentejo.

• Was awarded for 3 times by the technical Portuguese press, the best winemaker of the year in Portugal in 1997, 2007 and 2014.
• In 2010 was nominated by the German magazine “Der Feinschmecker ” at the Der Feinschmecker Wine Awards for Best Winemaker .
• In 205 was distinguished by the President of the Republic of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, with the Order of Business Merit, Class of Agricultural Merit.
• In addition to having w o n several international awards, his brand “Rubrica” ranked 9 in the selection of the “Top 100 Wines of the World ” in the magazine Wine Enthusiast!

Winemaking

The grapes were picked and taken to the winery in 25 kg boxes. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled, stainless steel vats, with prolonged skin contact. The wine was then aged for 6 months in used 300-litre French oak barrels.

Soil

Magnesian sedimentary loam soils, raging from sandy-loam to clay-loam. Whilst very low in organic matter, these slightly acid soil have average fertility and good water retention capacity.

Climate

Mediterranean, characterized by low-rainfalls and high daytime average temperatures duringsummer. Good summer and balanced pre-harvest thermal amplitude.

• APPEARANCE: Deep ruby
• AROMA: Black berry fruits, mint, balsamic notes with hints of oak
• TASTE: Medium to full bodied, rich dark fruit notes, balanced by firm tannins and barrel spice
• FINISH: Long and lingering
• ABV: 13.5%
