Description
Firestone Cabernet Sauvignon
Founded in 1972, Firestone was the first major estate winery to sink roots in Santa Barbara County. The winery’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean, a mere 26 miles to the west, ensures a relatively mild and arid climate throughout the year. The moderate weather and complex, rocky soils make this a perfect setting for our 340 acres of Bordeaux, Rhône and Burgundian varieties.
Vineyards
For a region that has been growing grapes since 1797, Paso Robles has become one of the most popular AVAs in California. Located between Santa Barbara and Monterey, this rolling countryside is synonymous with big, rich, high-character wines. The grapes for this Cabernet Sauvignon come from three vineyards near Paso Robles – from gently rolling south facing blocks, valley floor vineyards along a river and eastern facing vineyards on hills to the northeast. This region enjoys a moderately cool climate thanks to the influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean.
Vintage
2020 had a minimal amount of rain during the winter pushing Santa Barbara County back into drought conditions. We had an average bud break starting in March and a mild spring. Summer brought relatively mild temperatures with an extreme heat spike in late August with our vineyard weather stations recording 118°F! Our first pick was September 3rd. There was another short heat spike in mid September which lasted about one week, then back to consistent mild weather again, allowing us to pick each block at the optimum time. The Firestone vineyard was completely picked by November 3rd.
Tasting Notes
A true representation of Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, this wine expresses aromas of roasted plum, a touch of cherry and notes of black tea. The palate is lush and dark with red fruit characters, soft tannins and balanced acidity. A hint of toasted oak rounds out the finish. Pair this Cabernet Sauvignon with everyday barbecue fare, like hamburgers and simple steaks, or with charcuterie.
