Description
Crocus L’Atelier Malbec de Cahors
Crocus wines take their name from the famed Crocus Sativus flower, prized for producing the spice saffron. The Crocus flower has been grown and harvested in the Cahors region since the 14th century.
When internationally recognized winemaker Paul Hobbs and 4th generation Cahors vintner Bertrand Gabriel Vigouroux decided to work together, they set out to offer a new interpretation of the Malbec of Cahors, melding modernity and tradition. This collaboration between the new and the old world became Crocus wines, a quest to redefine Malbec in its birthplace.
Since Roman times, Cahors was a thriving city and wine producer, achieving recognition and far-reaching distribution of their ‘black wines’ across Europe and Russia. By the Middle Ages it was the largest wine producing region in France, exceeding Bordeaux. However, starting in 1241 the economy was gradually restricted by major events such as Bordeaux limiting year round access to its ports and increasing taxes, the French Revolution and World War I and II. In 1876, Cahors was further crippled by a series of natural disasters which ultimately led to the decline of Cahors ability to continue to prosper as a leading producer of wine.
Winemakers
Paul Hobbs’ pioneering work to revitalize vineyards and improve winemaking practices in Argentina began nearly 30 years ago, leading to the worldwide recognition of Malbec while defining the purest expression of Mendoza terroir.
Bertrand Gabriel is the 4th generation of a vintner family dedicated to Malbec in Cahors since 1887. In his quest for perfection, he continually seeks new ways to take his wine to the next level.
Terroir
Crocus wines are composed of Malbec selected from three recognized Cahors terroirs provided by the Massif Central mountains and the meandering Lot river: the Plateau and the 4th and 3rd Terraces located in the Valley.
L’Atelier refers to the artisan’s ‘workshop’, where skill, creativity and passion make art. Inspired by the diverse palette of Cahors terroirs, Hobbs and Vigouroux craft this wine from the vineyard deftly revealing a Malbec of structure and elegance, singular to these ancient soils.
Tasting Notes
Dark garnet color. Fresh aromas of violet, cherry blossom and wild flowers seamlessly blend with red and black fruit such as Burlat cherry and blackcurrant jam, finishing with a hint of spice.
